The country has been fortunate to have had a very 'enlightened' leader in
Lee, who is now the senior minister. Singapore has built the nation on the
people's PF contributions- it is mandatory and you get only about 2-2.5%
return. The bulk is used to build up the infrastructure.

Chinese also tend to be hard working and entreprenurial. But the main
reason for sustained growth is the vision of the leadership. Although there
is some corruption and crime, the goverment due mainly to the vision and
leadership of Lee has worked hard at fighting corruption, malaise and
building up an inclusive and forward looking society.

What does not come out in your report is that Singapore has more IT
developments which are up the value chain - inspite of a much smaller
industry base and an insigficant home market.

Our industry for a variety of causes still persists with the 'service'
mentality. This applied to other industries in the past - rag trade where
we provided a service largely in a niche market sector. Now the story is
repeating in the IT sector, here India will NOT achieve anything near its
true potential. I cannot a see an improvement without a radical change in
the governance of our nation.

For some of the less well travelled folks like me what I read today is
indeed
food for serious thought.
India: Singapore
Population 1 billion. 3.4 million
Area 1 million sq miles. 300 sq miles
Density 1000 people per sq mile. 10,000 per
sq
miles
GDP 382 billion dollars 96 billion dollars
Per capita GDP 382 dollars 30,000 dollars
Singapore is a diverse population with Chinese Malay and Indians. It
does not
have its own freshwater supply but gets it by pipeline from Malaysia. It
is
certainly more humid than India if not that hot. Yet people enjoy high
standard of living and is supposed to be one of the safest cities.
Government
actually encourages people to have more children. And Singapore only
became
independent in 1965.
That is a fascinating comparison. Can someone who has been to Singapore
enlighten me on what it is like and how these people have acheived it.
