Dear Sanjai, this is as far from the truth as the earlier claim that
'socialists' belive population is not a problem.
In reality, total fertility rates (a scale to measure the total no. of
children a woman has in her lifetime) were as high as 7.5 in ALL parts of
the world before the industrial revolution. There are groups in USA today
whose TFRs are close to 10.
Massive birth rates, coupled with declining death rates as a result of
increasing wealth after 1800 (arising from the industrial revolution) and
attention to public health since 1850s were critical in making the
Caucasian population jump by MUCH more in percentage terms than the Indian
population has jumped in the last 100 years. These 'excess' Caucasians
spread all over the world including Americas and Australia. Data shows that
Indian population as a RATIO of world population is only now
***recovering*** to its earlier (pre-1800) levels of 21.5% of world
population: even now we have to increase it by at least 400 million to
reach that level (see http://www.indiapolicy.org/debate/Notes/data2.html)
[not that I recommend this increase].
Easterlin charts out the decline in population growth rates in the West and
across the world very nicely in his book 'Growth Triumphant' which I
recommended in my last post.
Thanks, and I hope you found some sense at
