Hi,
Thank you for a very thoughtful article.You have presented the case for
urbanisation forcefully and I cannot help but agree with you.It is true that
man(brain)-power is the most wasted resource in India.Someone once told me
that we are the second most intelligent race in the world.Even if that is an
exaggeration the fact remains that we are a country of more than a billion
people who have learned to live in a state of blissful lethargy and constant
whining.Much blame can be placed on the government for not providing the
people with an environment where they can be productive.Since independence
we have been following a policy of appeasement.If the farmer needs
electricity  we subsidise it rather than encourage him to become more
productive and afford it.While this policy might help in getting votes ,it
encourages lethargy and results in a work force that learns to demand more
rather than produce more.Naturally we are faced with a situation where we
are no longer able to sustain the massive subsidisation and this drives the
disillusioned farmer towards the cities.
	Sometime back I had to travel through some slum areas in bombay and the
plight of the people living there brought tears to my eyes.What really
struck me was the fact that the people had resigned to their present state
and there was almost a feeling of contentment.If our workforce is going to
be satisfied by earning Rs.20 per day then they are going to work only so
much.I am not impling that the indian worker does not want money.What I am
saying is that years and years of inactivity has eroded our work ethics and
we would rather live among filth and dirt than work ourselves out of it.It
is this attitude that has to change first if we are to become more
productive.The horse has to be willing to drink water....I know that I am
presenting what is a personal opinion and what might even be wrong but I
will be the first person to be happy if someone in this forum proves me
wrong.Jai Hind.
