Agree with the part about a realistic, workable and just solution to Kashmir
through negotiations. But open border with Pakistan is a pure flight of fancy
for another 100 years. Do you realize how much hostility was there to opening
borders in Europe and even now Britain has held out against a borderless
Europe. Maybe peace in these five years and then some cultural and economic
exchange for a few decades before we even think of open borders fifty years
from now. Trouble with Indo- pak relations is that politicians on both sides
want to keep the pot simmering for domestic political reasons and as a result
we have the hoopla of bus diplomacy one month and prospect of nuclear war the
next. Also too much innocent blood was spilt during partition to pretend that
it will all be forgotten in a generation or two.

India and Pakistan have moved irreversibly along different paths and even
though culturally we have a lot in common with the people of Pakistan our
political philosophies (theocratic state versus a pluralistic secular nation)
are entirely irreconcilable.
