Dear Rajvi Mariwala,
I gather you are young individual and believe in ideals and in changing the
society for better by getting involved in public policy making or some such
thing. I can say that without hesitation because I know it is those rare kind
who get the idea of becoming a politician from within.
First of all. Thank you for sharing your ambition, and always remember yours
is a worthy aim, a very special one that cannot be usually appreciated in our
society of skeptics.
On the one hand, there are no exams per say (in a conventional sense) that
need to be given to enter politics, while on the other, entering politics and
being successful and yet preserve your ideals is toughest and never ending
examination that you have to keep taking perhaps as long as you wish to be in
public service.
If you look at the spectrum of people who are in politics, it would be hard to
define the have-to's of this career. However, in my view, knowledge of
government and public policy in the system of your nation, social issues helps
a lot, just as much helpful is the knowledge of international issues,
international politics, the world body such as the UN, systems of governance
in other big and small countries, specially democracies which are successful
in dealing with issues that your society and nation faces.
Listen to all of what your well wishers say, and filter the facts from their
perspectives cuz facts can never hurt. However, don't ever let your dream die
on somebody else's advice. You may not be prepared to enter politics just yet,
and while you work on that, you can very well take up other career (and
foreign service or civil service is as good as any) while you prepare yourself
and support yourself financially, but keep talking about your ambition, don't
let critics dampen your spirit. Keep looking for an opportunity and jump at
the first one you get, you will be gratefull that you found one.
I wish you good luck.
