Regarding the Corruption debate..

Hello,
      We say Indians do not like to encourage corruption, but at the same
time many of them do not bat an eye lid to grease the palms and get their
work done. Ofcourse there might be some exceptions but the above
contradiction is difficult to rationalize. The bottom line is that our
indifference ( our hallmark ) doesn't let us even feel that we can make a
difference in the society. It reminds us of Thomas Jefferson's quote "If
people are indifferent, the government will all be wolves".
      But I think that there is some silver lining. We can roused to action,
provided there is someone to take initiative. ( Everyone wants others to
make the first move ). That is why, class action suits are a rarity in
India.
      Can we give shape to citizen cousils, which will serve as the nodal
centers for collective action against corrupt officers. Ofcourse they are
non-statutary bodies. But there are instances where accountability was
enforced by a vibrant local media ( to give wide coverage ) and vigilant
public. This will address the grievance of many an individual that there is
no forum to bring about public pressure on the government departments. A
similar thing was spelt out more clearly by P.V.Indiresan in one of his
articles ( THE HINDU ).
When internet spreads, it will be still easier to have such counsils.
