Two write-ups

[Two of my modems got burnt out in less than 6 months in Shillong for
causes mysterious (none got burnt out in five years of continuous use in
USA). Almost impossible to get any kind of internet connection most of the
time anyway. Great fun, this internet thing! My third modem (and these
don't come cheap in India) is just not able to work smoothly. Almost
completely destroyed my computer's programmes in the process. Most of my
mail is not downloadable yet. I have barely been able to upload some stuff.
Well, enough of this cribbing, which is needless in India, I believe. We
just have to live with all this and say we are a Mahaan nation.]
I am posting this with a request to folks to kindly check out the following:
a) My short booklet entitled, "Becoming Rich and Powerful: A Primer for the
Citizens of Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh," at
../debate/Notes/sas-book1.doc
and at the publications page of IPI. This is in the public domain, for wide
discussion. I wonder if anyone can come forward to make it available on
roadsides and railway stations of India for Rs.5 per booklet. That was why
it was written in the first place, a write-up started in 1997, well before
I helped start IPI. It got derailed for nearly 3 years, but is somewhat
ready now. This material is meant for mass discussion and debate. Comments,
specially critical ones, will be highly appreciated.
b) In response to the endless debates on political corruption on IPI, I
have summarized my findings in "The imperatives of political corruption in
India," at
../debate/Notes/pol-funding.doc
I have analyzed real-life data to some extent in this short paper. This is
also at the publications page. This write-up requires serious discussion. I
have also circulated it to some very senior officers here. Pl. see what
lacuna exist in this write-up and let me know.
Next step: I am currently writing a note on how to resolve Dr. Pronab Sen's
objections. Have discussed with a senior bank official and I believe Dr.
Sen's objections can be met.
Cheers!
SS.
