No easy solution....

Dear comrades,
It is not so surprising to see so many active participants
debating
about corruption. I feel that everyone is right and also wrong in their
analysis.
The reasons for the collosal corruption in India, goes beyond the
lack
of integrity, the skewed distribution of wealth and the pathetic and
incherent policies.
It is beyond dispute that our tax structure, the enforcing
mechanism
and resources and the tax filing nightmare breed tax evasion and
corruption.
Be it the cutoms duty, excise duty, sales tax or the income tax, it is
as
though they are formulated in a manner that encourage more and more
corruption at all places.
But our unsatiable greed for money, a natural inclination to evade
the
law cannot be discounted. It might be true that the opulence of
americans
might be a factor in their paying the taxes. But how many of the rich
and
wealthy in India are upright, when it comes to paying taxes. Nothing can
slake our lust for the lucre and we will not balk at the thought of
breaking
the law.
Add to this the disgusting self-righteous attitude of Indians.
Everyone
feels that he is paragon of virtues and finds fault with the society for
all
the maladies, without realizing that he is a part of that stinking
society.
We harangue and fret about corruption, but feel no guilt in bribing the
clerk in the RTO office to get our international license. Compounding
the
problem is the instance of fence grazing the crop; law enforcers being
the
breakers of the same law.
Yes, we should be rightly proud of our acheivements. BUt if that
becomes an extenuating reason to make an introspection, we will only be
leaving a rotten society to the next generation.
Prasad Boddupalli.
