Re: nuclear India

[Topics under debate]: GOOD GOVERNANCE

I have a question for Sanjeev and others who have a "different" view of
the nuclear question. Why is it that they think it is important for India
to commit to nuclear disarmament when its immediate and menacing neighbors
are armed to the nuclear teeth. As a classical liberal economist, I
believe in a limited role for the state. One of those roles however, (and
to my mind, THE primary one) is to provide for the common defence and the
safety and security of its citizens. The Vajpayee government would have
been in abject dereliction of its duty if it did not proceed with
weaponisation forthwith.

Given the subsequent events in the Balkans, the decision to go nuclear
stands utterly and completely justified. I am especially amused by sermons
given to India by citizens in countries such as Brazil, Japan, Australia,
etc. all of whom enjoy the protection of Uncle Sam's nuclear umbrella. I
wonder how many of them will stay on their moralistic high horse once that
umbrella is closed. Guess what ? It's still raining.

Regards, Indranil.
