Dear Dr. Roy,
It's deja vu all over again! A while ago, I gave up a correspondence
with
Mr. Vinay Chandekar because it seemed like we were going nowhere (he was
arguing that the Soviet Union is a better model than the US etc.). I
have to
do likewise in the present case for the following reason:
1. When SS mentioned dowry deaths in India, you countered by writing
about
no-fault divorce laws. You are factually correct about political
correctness
etc., although your argument seems a little silly to me (comparing dowry
deaths to divorce laws) because there is a difference of order of
magnitude
between the 2.
2. For some reason, US bashing is the most popular sport of the rest of
the
world (& the left wing in the US). Also, people who have never
experienced
the US seem to hold the strongest opinions! The result of this is that
for
any good thing written about the US gets countered by quoting a bad
thing.
It is an issue about which there can be no dialog -- each side has its
mind
made up. So let us not waste other people's time.
3. The real task at hand is the improvement of India. I believe there is
a
great consensus on the DIRECTION in which India needs to move
(transparency,
property-rights, openness etc.). Let us keep working on what we agree
on.
So: this is the last time I am going to try arguing for the US!
Thx,
manoj
