I second Subroto here.
Consider this- in US elections voter turnout is around 40-50% of the
population
eligible to vote, meaning those registered to vote. A win by getting
50-60% of
the polled vote means that a candidate was voted for by a mere 20-30% of
the
electorate. By contrast Indian voter turnout is much higher, which to me
gives
the elections a much greater democratic legitimacy.
