NASA and Charu's exaggeration....

Sorry but your facts are just wrong. the transistor was invented at AT&T
Bell
Labs. As to internet research, yes, it was mostly funded by the US Dept
of
Defense though I don't see the military application then or now. As to
the
impossibility of civilian funding for such projects, I find your
statement un
supported. A simple counter example to your argument is space
exploration- NASA
is a civilian agency.

Boy are we in for a big one!! The Space race began as a show of
Military power in the 1960's between the US and USSR. In fact, USSR has
put Sputnik (the first Satellite) on a Rocket that was originally
designed to deliver Nukes!! Yes, there are lots of Civilian uses for
NASA but let us not forget that the impetus was provided by the Military
initially and that is what I have said in my previous message.
Charu, you are one amazing dude! I don't even know where to begin
with your assertion that Internet doesn't have a Military application.
The Internet was initially concieved by DARPA of USA so that
key/critical network systems can function after a nuclear strike (given
that they themselves are not hit). I don't know if I have lost you? In
fact, BITS (Battlefield Information Transfer System) that is being put
together now at Sandia is of this nature and it will be used to pound
Indians like you and me, in the future!! Yes, Internet now has
unlimited number of civilian uses but remember that the impetus is from
the Military.
As for the Diode/Transistor, it was funded by the Military because
there was a need for a highly responsive "switch" for Fuzing mechanisms
in Bombs. Actually, the Military never got to use this until recently
after the initial technology was highly refined through Civilian
applications but once again, LET US NOT FORGET that the initial push
came from the Military!!
Let us think logically and truthfully for a strong and prosperous
India - I think we can certainly put aside our egos for this humble
goal?!!
Sincerely,
Vamsi M.
